"There is a tragic story behind every face," said a member of our most recent team of volunteers to our mission in Romania. She wanted to sponsor one of the new children at our Emanuel orphanage and had enquired about his history.
The three newest children, aged 3, 4, and 7, had been taken by their mother to a distant town where she became the mistress of a gypsy. He beat them often; once so badly that the youngest child was rushed to hospital for a ruptured gall bladder. The mother finally abandoned her lover and her children and left the country-leaving him to put the kids on the streets day and night, begging for money. Three little children, aged 3, 4, and 7, became his cash machine. But they were so traumatized by the fear of him and their miserable, lonely existence that they could not even speak.
That's the tragedy.
But the victory is that the authorities found the children-alone, malnourished, frightened-on the streets of Arad in the middle of the night and asked if we could take them in. How could we say no? It is a touching sight to see the three siblings asleep in their bed every night, their arms entwined around one another as if to offer mutual protection.
Now it is our job to protect them.
Now they sleep in peace.
Now, for the first time in their lives, they have plenty of food.
Now, they are in a family setting with adults and playmates that freely demonstrate their love, and the Lord's love, for all children.
The tragedy is that there are tens of thousands of Cristinas and Mirels and Ionuts in Romania. But the victory is that ICAF is able to rescue some of them and give them a lifetime of acceptance, happiness, and love.
