Miracles Among Us tells the amazing story of how one person felt called by God to serve orphaned children in Romania, and records the eventful journey that ensued over the next 16 years. It illustrates how the Lord calls ordinary people and then empowers them to perform extraordinary acts of service to “the least of these our brethren.” It shows how God sends signs—miracles—to demonstrate His sovereignty, for truly, in Him all things are possible, and these miracles further encourage people to do His will.

Hundreds of people, from elementary school children to octogenarians, have traveled to Romania on short-term mission trips to serve the children cared for by International Children’s Aid Foundation. They have felt their lives changed, their priorities in life realigned, by what they saw there.

This is their story. This is the story of how ordinary people with no particular expertise in theology or world missions heard the call of God—and responded to it. It will introduce you to some of the most precious children, and how their lives have changed through the love and care of this ministry of our all-volunteer organization.

These pages will take you through the journey they made, with incidents that were at times humorous, frustrating, humbling, and inspirational—but who looked to Christ for guidance and saw His encouragement in amazing ways.

Every Face a Tragedy
Every Face a Victory!

"There is a tragic story behind every face," said a member of our most recent team of volunteers to our mission in Romania. She wanted to sponsor one of the new children at our Emanuel orphanage and had enquired about his history.

The three newest children, aged 3, 4, and 7, had been taken by their mother to a distant town where she became the mistress of a gypsy. He beat them often; once so badly that the youngest child was rushed to hospital for a ruptured gall bladder. The mother finally abandoned her lover and her children and left the country-leaving him to put the kids on the streets day and night, begging for money. Three little children, aged 3, 4, and 7, became his cash machine. But they were so traumatized by the fear of him and their miserable, lonely existence that they could not even speak.

That's the tragedy.

But the victory is that the authorities found the children-alone, malnourished, frightened-on the streets of Arad in the middle of the night and asked if we could take them in. How could we say no? It is a touching sight to see the three siblings asleep in their bed every night, their arms entwined around one another as if to offer mutual protection.

Now it is our job to protect them.

Now they sleep in peace.

Now, for the first time in their lives, they have plenty of food.

Now, they are in a family setting with adults and playmates that freely demonstrate their love, and the Lord's love, for all children.

The tragedy is that there are tens of thousands of Cristinas and Mirels and Ionuts in Romania. But the victory is that ICAF is able to rescue some of them and give them a lifetime of acceptance, happiness, and love.
